"Laissez les bon temps rouler" (Cajun French for "Let the good times roll")
Bruvvers is more than a theatre company; we're the embodiment of a political idea in action. The idea is ACCESS and it extends to every area of activity – our audience, the work, employment practice, the working process, the development of our base and our future evolution.
Bruvvers were formed in 1970 out of a commitment to take radical theatre to audiences who couldn't normally go to the theatre: poor audiences, working-class audiences, the disadvantaged, the dispossessed, the elderly, the very young.
What do we mean by radical theatre? Put simply, this means entertaining education and enlightening entertainment; empowering audiences by confronting difficult, important issues and mediating them through dramatic situations and individuals that they can relate to. We are intent upon nothing less than a revolution driven by fun.
The difference with the Bruvvers' revolution is that we are financially responsible. We do not incur deficits, and we have never gone over-budget. We operate as a small business in the community and we understand the importance of financial probity. It's an integral part of the trust that exists between the company, our audience and our funders.
This year's programme continues Bruvvers’ commitment to radical access: a range of innovative new work, new writing, new music and staging which targets our audiences' needs.
The regularity of Bruvvers' work has made us a feature in the community life of the audiences we serve. Student teachers we played to thirty years ago are now headteachers and they're still booking us. Parents and grandparents who watched shows as ‘little uns' are now bringing their own children along!
Each year, Bruvvers play to an estimated audience of 50,000 people.
Past shows include: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, God Bless Thee Jacky Maddison by CP Taylor, The Three Little Pigs by acclaimed Eastern European playwright Domi Gast, Sinbad The Sailor and many many more.
